Tasting notes
Initially slightly closed, yet very concentrated and balanced. Then it opens up: aromas of star fruit, pineapple, orange zest, Boscop, papaya, elderflower, sweet yeast bread, black truffle as well as a delicate herbal note underlaid with subtle woody notes, slightly smoky, viscous and the typical expressive slateminerality and salinity.
Food pairing
A magnum bottle is wonderfully suited for any larger celebration. Wonderful with fish and seafood, for example "Gravad Lax". Also excellent with all spicy, and hearty dishes. A sensational soloist but also an excellent partner for grilled dishes…
Growing region and climate
On the Moselle riverbank before the exit of Bernkastel lies the top vineyard Bernkasteler Lay. In its heart, on finely weathered slate soil, the very old vines for this GG grow across eight hectares. The vineyards face west to southwest, with a gentle slope of 115 to 135 meters above sea level. This particular orientation of the site ensures good sun exposure almost at any time of day, which contributes to the later aromatic profile in the grapes.
Processing and aging
The grapes are hand-picked and carefully selected. They were then gently crushed in the tubs in the vineyard to allow for a longer maceration time. Whole cluster pressing took place over approximately 14 hours. This wine was fermented without any added yeast or enzymes in Doppelstück barrels (2400 litres) for approximately 6 months. For greater complexity and stability, it was left on the fine lees for at least three to four months.
