Tasting Notes
Very concentrated with a wonderful bouquet of candied pineapple, dried apricots, honeydew melon, mango, and papaya. On the palate, fully ripe fruit and a hint of caramel.
Food Pairing
Excellent with select cheeses. A dream with any dessert. Excellent with foie gras.
Processing and Aging
The grapes for this wine were hand-picked and then gently pressed. They were lightly crushed in the transport boxes already in the vineyard to allow for a longer maceration time. The whole bunch pressing then followed for approximately 16 hours at low pressure. Without any added yeast or enzymes, the wine was partially fermented in stainless steel tanks for five to seven months. The subsequent aging in large wooden barrels gave it more complexity.
Growing Region and Climate
The residents of Wehlen have the pleasure of idyllically observing their best vineyard site on the opposite side of the Moselle. Our property is located right in the heart of this world-famous vineyard, which owes its name to a sundial carved into the rock in 1842. The Wehlener Sonnenuhr (Wehlen Sundial) covers 65 hectares in a south-southwest direction at an elevation of 110 to 250m above sea level. Medium-deep, stony loamy soils on slate from the Devonian period form the basis for excellent Rieslings.
