Tasting Notes
Pure exoticism… Aromas of banana, papaya, lychee, physalis, melon, kumquat, peach, pineapple, and elderflower. A hint of damp slate on the nose. Very juicy, dense, and concentrated with the typical Mosel minerality.
Food Pairing
Excellent with selected cheeses. Always a perfect partner for fruity desserts. Great with very spicy curries.
Vinification and Aging
The grapes are hand-picked and carefully selected. In the tubs in the vineyard, they were then crushed to allow for a longer maceration period. Whole cluster pressing took place over approximately 14 hours. This wine was fermented in stainless steel tanks for approximately four months without any added yeasts or enzymes. For more complexity and stability, it was left on the fine lees for at least three to four months.
Growing Region and Climate
On the banks of the Mosel, before the exit of Bernkastel, lies the prime vineyard Bernkasteler Lay. Within its core, on eight hectares of finely weathered slate soil, grow the very old vines for this Auslese. The vineyards face west to southwest, with a gentle slope ranging from 115 to 135 meters above sea level. Due to this particular orientation of the site, good sun exposure is guaranteed almost at all times of the day, which contributes to the later aromatic profile of the grapes.
